Free Online Reading Time Calculator

The Reading Time Calculator tells you instantly how long it will take to read any piece of text. Paste your content into the box, choose a reading speed that fits your audience, and the tool shows the reading time in minutes and seconds along with the word and character count. All processing happens directly in your browser — nothing is ever uploaded or stored.

Why reading time matters

Readers decide in seconds whether a page is worth their time. Displaying a clear reading time at the top of a blog post, article, or documentation page sets expectations and reduces bounce rates. A/B tests consistently show that readers engage longer and complete more content when they know how much time they are committing to. For email campaigns, subject lines and preview text that include a reading-time cue lift open and click rates.

Choosing the right reading speed

The tool offers three modes because not all text is read at the same pace:

Pick the mode that best matches your target audience and content type to get the most accurate estimate.

How to use the calculator

  1. Paste or type your text into the input field.
  2. Select the reading speed that fits your content.
  3. The reading time, word count, and character count update live — no button needed.

Switch between modes at any time to compare estimates for different audiences.

How the calculation works

Reading time is calculated by dividing your word count by the selected words-per- minute rate and converting the result to minutes and seconds. The minimum result is one second for any non-empty text. Words are counted by splitting on whitespace, so irregular spacing from copy-pasted content is handled correctly.

Privacy by design

Because the entire calculation runs on your device, you can safely paste confidential drafts, internal documents, or unpublished manuscripts. The tool works offline once the page has loaded and does not log any input.

FAQ

What reading speed does this calculator use?

The Normal mode uses 238 words per minute (average adult reading speed). Technical mode uses 150 WPM for dense or academic content. Code mode uses 100 WPM for source code with comprehension.

Is my text stored or uploaded anywhere?

No. All calculation happens locally in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server and is never stored.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time = number of words ÷ words per minute × 60. The result is rounded to the nearest second, with a minimum of 1 second for any non-empty text.

When should I use Technical or Code mode?

Use Technical mode for scientific papers, legal documents, or dense business reports. Use Code mode for source code listings or highly technical documentation where readers must think through each line.
